Tarkington ISD Weather and Severe Weather Information

Severe Weather Preparedness & Response

Inclement Weather Procedures

When presented with a potential inclement weather event, TISD uses the following protocol to help drive the decision-making process to alter the school day. The concern for student and staff safety always serves as the main driver when these decisions are made, and we always strive to err on the side of caution. Each weather incident is unique and demands unique considerations.

We know that when we alter the school day, it has a significant impact on families. We also want to ensure that we are making decisions that minimize any negative impact on student learning. In other words, when there is no safety concern in getting to school, we want to make sure that our students are at school. This is the balance we constantly weigh when making school closure decisions.

Weather Update:

January 25, 2026

This afternoon, Tarkington ISD administration participated in a weather briefing with regional Emergency Management Offices and surrounding school districts regarding weather conditions for Tuesday. While rainfall has subsided, we remain concerned about frigid temperatures overnight and the potential for icy road conditions that could impact the safe travel of students and staff Tuesday morning.

A follow up weather call is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, at which time a decision will be made regarding whether school will be held on Tuesday. The safety of our school community is our highest priority. We are especially mindful of staff members who commute, as well as our bus routes and families traveling for student drop off.

Families will receive an update tomorrow afternoon by 3:00 p.m. through our official communication channels, including email, text message, and the district website.

January 23, 2026

Due to the forecasted weather conditions and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students, staff, and families; Tarkington ISD schools will be closed on Monday, January 26. No classes or school activities will be held on Monday.

This decision was made after careful review of weather forecasts and potential impacts to student and staff travel as well as campus operations. The safety of our school community remains our highest priority.

We will continue to monitor weather conditions for Tuesday and will share updates through our official communication channels, including email, text message, social media, and the district website, no later than 8 p.m. on Sunday. Please ensure your contact information is current so you receive all notifications.
