In 1981, when John Kirchner walked across the stage at the Tarkington High School graduation to receive his diploma, he did not know that 24 years later, he would be the man who would one day oversee all the personnel, programs and facilities that lead up to that culminating moment on graduation night. However, in late June 2005, the TISD Board of Trustees hired him to be the superintendent of his alma mater.
An educator for 22 years, Mr. Kirchner began his career at Tarkington as an elementary PE teacher. After that he taught, coached and served as an administrator in several Liberty County districts. He and his wife, Reba, who is a Tarkington Middle School teacher, have two children. Their daughter, a 2005 Tarkington graduate, is currently attending the University of Texas at Dallas. Their son, a 2007 Tarkington graduate, has completed one semester of college and is now serving in the United States Marine Corp.
When asked about TISD, Mr. Kirchner says, "Tarkington is a wonderful community school, which like hundreds of other districts across the state, has an inviting family atmosphere." |
